What exactly are barefoot shoes – and how are they different from conventional footwear?

At first glance, the answer seems simple: barefoot shoes have a thinner sole and more room for the toes. But in reality, the difference goes much deeper.
The basic idea behind barefoot shoes is very simple – a shoe should interfere as little as possible with the way our feet naturally stand and move.
We need shoes. They protect our feet from cold, moisture, hot pavement, stones and other external influences. But in order to do that, does a shoe really need to raise our heel, squeeze our toes, support the arch and restrict the movement of the foot?
This is where the difference between barefoot shoes and many conventional shoes begins.
1. The toes have space that matches the shape of the foot
Look at your bare foot from above. The front of the foot does not end in a pointed or rounded cone. The toes sit next to one another, and when we move, they need space to spread.
Now look at a typical shoe. Very often, it starts narrowing exactly where the toes are. We are so used to this shape that we barely notice it anymore. But if we forget about fashion for a moment and simply compare the shape of the foot with the shape of the shoe, the question becomes quite obvious:
why do we put the widest and most mobile part of the foot into the part of the shoe that becomes narrower?
In barefoot shoes, the toe area or toe box follows the anatomical shape of the foot. The big toe can continue in its natural direction, while the other toes have room to move and spread. And this is not just a matter of comfort. Regularly squeezing the toes into narrow footwear is also associated with toe deformities, including hallux valgus, commonly known as a bunion.
2. The heel is not raised and the toes are not held upwards
When we talk about a raised heel, high-heeled shoes are probably the first thing that comes to mind. But heel elevation is also built into many sports shoes, everyday shoes and even children’s footwear.
Barefoot shoes use a zero drop construction – the heel and the forefoot are positioned at the same height.
This means the shoe does not place the foot on a permanent forward slope. And this is no longer only about the foot itself. When the position of the foot changes, the position of the ankle, knees and hips changes as well, along with the position of the body’s centre of mass. In order to remain upright and balanced, the body compensates for these changes higher up the movement chain. In this way, heel elevation can affect our posture as a whole.
The higher the heel, the more pronounced these biomechanical changes become. With prolonged use of significantly elevated heels, the body can also adapt to this position – studies have observed changes in the calf muscles, increased Achilles tendon stiffness and reduced ankle range of motion.
But there is another feature of conventional shoe construction that is discussed far less often. Look at many sports shoes from the side. The front of the shoe curves upwards. This is called toe spring. As a result, even when standing still, the shoe holds the toes slightly lifted away from the ground. This is not merely a design feature either – this position changes the way the forefoot works during movement.
In barefoot footwear, the foot is kept much closer to a neutral position: the heel is not artificially raised at one end and the toes are not constantly lifted at the other.
As shown in the illustration, when viewed from the side, the base of a barefoot shoe is flat – allowing the foot to sit in a position similar to standing barefoot on the ground.
3. The sole bends together with the foot
Pick up your shoes and try bending them. Many conventional shoes have relatively stiff soles or only bend in a specific area. Some are almost impossible to bend or twist at all.
Now try moving your bare foot. The foot is not a rigid platform. It contains 26 bones and 33 joints, together with a complex system of muscles, ligaments and tendons. As we walk, the foot changes shape, adapts to the surface, absorbs load and then helps move the body forwards.
If the foot itself is made to move, it is worth asking: why surround it with a structure that prevents that movement?
This is why the sole of a barefoot shoe is flexible both lengthways and across the foot. It moves together with the foot instead of forcing the foot to move only where the shoe allows it.
Put simply – in a rigid shoe, part of the foot’s natural movement is restricted by the shoe itself. A flexible sole leaves that work to the foot.
4. The sole is thin – and there is a reason for it
This is probably the best-known feature of barefoot shoes. But the purpose of a thin sole is not to prove how bravely we can walk over stones.
The foot is also a sensory organ. The sensory receptors within it provide the nervous system with information about the surface beneath us – whether it is hard, soft, sloping, slippery or uneven. Our body uses this information to adapt the way we move. The more material there is between the foot and the ground, the more this information is dampened. A thin sole provides mechanical protection while allowing the foot to feel the surface beneath it much more clearly. This does not mean that every barefoot shoe needs to have an equally thin sole. A winter boot, an everyday city shoe and a hiking shoe all have different requirements. But the principle remains the same – the sole protects the foot without isolating it from the ground more than necessary.
5. The arch does not necessarily need to be shaped by the shoe
Many conventional shoes include pronounced arch support. But the arch of the foot is not a rigid architectural structure. It is a living, dynamic system. Its shape changes under load, and its function involves the muscles, ligaments and tendons of the foot.
The barefoot approach is therefore different: instead of the shoe shaping and supporting the foot from the outside, the foot is given space to do the work itself.
A typical barefoot shoe therefore does not have pronounced artificial arch support, rigid foot control or other structural elements designed to determine the position of the foot.
Of course, there are specific health conditions and rehabilitation situations in which a specialist may prescribe orthotics or other forms of support. That is a different matter from assuming that a healthy foot automatically requires permanent external support.
So what exactly is a barefoot shoe?
Individual barefoot features can also be found in other types of footwear. One sports shoe may have a wide toe box. Another may have a fairly flexible sole. Another may have little or no heel elevation. But one of these features alone is not enough.
A barefoot shoe is a combination of these principles.
They can be recognised by three main criteria:
A wide, foot-shaped toe box – the toes are not compressed and have room to move and spread freely.
Zero drop and a flat shoe base – the heel and forefoot are positioned at the same level, the toe is not strongly curved upwards, and the shoe does not create artificial arch support.
A thin and flexible sole – it bends and twists easily together with the foot while still allowing us to feel the surface beneath us.
None of these features is particularly radical on its own.
The toes have space.
The heel is level with the forefoot.
The foot can bend.
The toes can move.
We can feel the ground.
Fundamentally, the idea behind barefoot shoes is not to make the foot do anything unusual.
Quite the opposite – it is a way of designing footwear that aims to interfere as little as possible with what the foot is already built to do.
And once you start looking at footwear from this perspective, perhaps the real question is not why choose barefoot shoes, but why we have spent so long treating restrictive footwear as the default.
